MOVING TIPS
Moving day can be exciting and, at the same time, overwhelming. Planning ahead will ease the process and help your move go smoothly. Start packing items you will not be using every day as soon as possible and everything else as you get closer to moving day. Focus on one room at a time to avoid being overwhelmed.
Just like you, kids and pets do stress when getting ready to move. Make sure that you have a plan before, during, and after moving day.
Here are a few tips on what to plan for:
-
Reserve your movers as soon as you have a moving date, whether hiring professional movers or handling the move yourself with friends and family.
-
De-clutter as soon as you know you will be moving. We tend to accumulate so many things over the years and not realize how much we really have.
-
Gather packing supplies
- boxes
- packing paper
- bubble wrap for fragile items
- tape to seal the boxes
- markers
- label boxes by room and general contents
-
Inform utility companies so they know when to prepare your last billing for the place you are leaving. Also contact utility companies where you will be going so they can set up your services on the day you arrive.
-
Cleaning: Will you be doing the cleaning up before leaving or should you hire a cleaning service?
-
Forward mail when you move or relocate | Personal | Canada Post(opens in new tab) : although we don’t receive as much mail from Canada Post as we have in the past, it is always a good idea to have your mail forwarded to your new address.

Where to start:
- Start by clearing your bookcases. Books can be very heavy so it is recommended to use boxes specific for books to avoid excessive weight.
- Linens – pack linens that you will not be needing until you are in your new home.
- Keep going from room to room and decide what can be packed now and what you will be needing until moving day.
Be careful when packing boxes to make sure that you are not crushing fragile items by placing heavy items on top of fragile items.
If possible, be sure to not overload any boxes.
